A quick look at the significant injuries in the Metropolitan Division.

This division could end up upside down if a couple of teams get significant injuries. Healthy rosters will be a must here, some teams saw some of their depth leave via free agency over the off season.

With one Staal returning, the other gets a bad break. Jordan is out for considerable time, however if the Hurricanes can cover his loss their season may not be a disaster. Staal needs to have a good rehab and be back to his best as it will only be a 40 game season for him.

The most disappointing situation in Columbus is the degerative condition of Nathan Horton’s back. Yes Boone Jenner will be out until Mid November, but if Horton is able to get back on the ice late in the season, he could be a big boost for the club. Hopefully Ryan Murray’s knee problem is minor, his development is key to Columbus’s improvement in the Metro division.

New Jersey

Unbelievably the Devils are basically healthy. Besides Brunner getting hit in the face with a puck, it is just Ryan Clowe and his concussion symptoms that may keep the Devils from having a full roster to pick from for game 1.

New York Islanders

Look at that, the Islanders are basically healthy, those that are ‘day to day’ are looking like they will be good for opening day. Lets hope for Garth Snow’s sake, they don’t get off to a slow start, no excuses this season.

New York Rangers

Ok, ignoring the Ryan Malone PTO, Derek Stepan is the major concern for the Rangers. From what I have read, they are not going to put him on the LTIR, so they are expecting him back sooner rather than later. Mid Nov is what I am reading.

OK, so we know about Kimmo and about Pronger, the issues with the active Flyers rosters are not too damaging, Simmons will play, day to day at the moment, but that is precautionary. Giroux in the same boat, looks good for you Flyers fans, enjoy opening night!

For a team that is expected to compete for the Cup they have a few early season injury issues. Beau Bennett as usual ends up on the IR, this time with a ‘tweak’ that could keep him out till Dec (they say mid Nov, but with Bennett’s history I’m not banking on that short of return). Olli Maatta is still rehabbing from a shoulder surgery in the off season. Penguins fans are hoping it doesn’t hinder progression from a great rookie season. Bortuzzo is out until the end of December, depth player who has stepped up and looks to take a bottom pairing, this could be a problem for his roster spot. The big one, Maklin, this has been a day to day, and ongoing disclosed injury all pre season. Who knows if he is going to start game 1, all the Penguins fans care about is if he starts game 1 of the playoffs healthy, this is one to watch though, the team has really kept their cards close to the chest here. Side note, the no 8 draft pick in the Staal trade Pouliot is still missing contact.

Mike Green is probably going to play the season opener, no matter what your opininon of Green is, he is essential to this Capitals team and their success. Looks like Orlov is headed to the LTIR due to a broken wrist, a healthy Orlov is important to the Caps depth. The biggest injury is the Volpatti injury, a spinal fusion is no small surgery, not being cleared for contact may suggest he is a way off from returning to the ice.
